Living in hawick mumsnet I have a 3 year old DD so no experience yet of primary schools but my husband is a secondary teacher so have an idea of good schools around. Easily avoided. This is something worth bearing in mind if it matters to you. Does anyone have experience of living in Hampstead Heath/Highgate? Are the people nice there, keen to talk to each other (for example mums in the playground). Lived on Goldworth Park 1994 to 2000 then moved to Barnsbury where we lived for 11 years. They live a simple lifestyle - no keeping up with the Joneses type shit - but have everything they need/want. Yes it has areas which aren't great, but there are lots of lovely little villages nearby. It has good transport links, lovely culture in the centre. Bingo . Hawick is very well known for knitwear and the annual Common Riding festivals. We'd absolutely not move back! We are in the old town - close to town centre and station for DH commute to central London (relatively cheap met line). There are two high schools in Handbridge so it can be quite busy at certain times of the day (pupils from rival schools used to have fights when I went but I’m sure they don’t anymore ) I’d avoid going too close to the Lache and Saltney. However many people here seem to praise Muswell Hill or Crouch End. She’s in a shared house in Canley, so in easy walking distance of the campus and the Tescos! It’s a nice house in good condition, rent is £3000 a month between the four of them, including all bills. But surrounding Heckford Park is not too bad, limited parking most houses don’t have drives. There is a nice park in High Barnet (Old Court House) and Victoria Park in New Barnet and Oak Hill Park in East Barnet (in the summer we go up to St Albans for the splash park in Verulamium Park). Not sure about Coton Park - doesn't have a reputation that I'm aware of, but some social housing will have been put in when they built the estate. Positives are a nice environment, very good schools through to high school, good transport links with the city and a lot of the housing is very affordable if you're not fussy about having a pretty house (there's lots of 70s housing which has no kerb appeal but actually works brilliantly for family life). Four great parks all within 10 - 15 min walk. It's as beautiful as ever, seems to have undergone a lot of "gentrification" so there's the surfing, fishing, skating and beach bum chilled out groups of people alongside those with more expensive taste, kinda of fashionable hipster vibe. The town is fairly decent looking and there are some nice houses (you’ll get a lot more for your money than London!), but the traffic in and out in rush hour is pretty bad. Some of the more remote larger towns who have lost their industry - like Hawick - May have suffered for the young, but for someone who didn't need to work you'd also get a whole lot of house for your buck. However I'd potentially look at areas just outside of Sheffield for living, as unless you want to spend a lot a lot of the places aren't super nice to live. You can have an amazing lifestyle there if you have even a medium amount of money, but the price is houses with high walls with barbed wire and security on call. Economy-wise, that area is under Sellafield's thrall, which provides well-paid, stable employment. The North Deeside Road is a good bus route so you wouldn’t go far wrong being close to it. Looking at affordable areas, Cramlington is alright- not the most beautiful place but built around lots of green areas and cycle paths which is actually really nice. there is homelessness etc but that’s everywhere now. A 4 bed, in town with a couple of parking spaces is likely to be a good bit more than £450. 1 hour from Galashiels on the train into Edinburgh. Southampton is a very very green city but with lots of amenities while Southsea/Portsmouth is much more urban. There is not a single grocers, hairdressers, newsagent, cafe, coffee shop, restaurant, pub, bank, post office etc etc in the entire place. Absolutely nothing for the younger generations to do in the city centre so they just loiter around. I have heard BR6 is the preferred area there, but we came across a house on Tintagel road and were wondering how is it in terms of safety, security, especially with a baby. Now there are lots of nice places - the Grapevine is a fab Turkish, Khoi Khoi and Alloro’s have been great during lockdown. It’s a great small market town with really good restaurants and bars, excellent bakers, butchers etc, a strong community spirit and lovely walks, being at the start of the Sandstone Trail.
